Have your programs Run as Administrator

SOURCE

There are some programs that need to be run in Administrator Mode in order to function properly. Here are just some examples of the types of programs that would need to do this:

  • Programs that access protected areas of your computer such as the System and Windows folders, and even the C Drive
  • Any Spyware / Adware / Malware / Virus removal programs
  • Any Disk or Performance Utilities

Aside from typing the program in the Windows Start Menu Search bar and pressing Ctrl+Shift+Enter, you can have a program always run in Administrator Mode.

To do this, right click the program and choose properties. Click on the Compatibility tab near the top.

Select “Run this program as Administrator” and click Apply.

That’s it! You never have to go through the hassle of right clicking and choosing Run as Administrator each time. This is very useful if you use a program launcher such as Launchy, and are unable to right click the program icon.

What if I can’t find the Compatibility Tab?

No worries. The icon you have selected is probably a shortcut, so you would have to find the original .exe file. It shows up for most shortcuts, but sometimes it doesn’t and I have no idea why.
Anyways, if you can’t find the Compatibility tab at the top, select the Shortcut tab anyway.

Select everything except the quotation marks in the “Start in” box and copy it.

Then open your Start Menu, click on Computer, paste the information in the address bar and press Enter.

Once you are at the directory, look for the .exe file. Right click it and choose properties, and the compatibility tab should be there.

Start Google Chrome directly in incognito mode

If you are impressed with the incognito mode in Google Chrome , you can directly make Chrome start in incognito mode instead of manually selecting incognito window.

About incognito window:

Pages you view in this window won't appear in your browser history or search history, and they won't leave other traces, like cookies, on your computer after you close the incognito window. Any files you download or bookmarks you create will be preserved, however.

Going incognito doesn't affect the behavior of other people, servers, or software. Be wary of:
Websites that collect or share information about you
Internet service providers or employers that track the pages you visit
Malicious software that tracks your keystrokes in exchange for free smileys
Surveillance by secret agents
People standing behind you

Here is how you do it:

1. Right click your Chrome icon on the desktop.

2. Select properties

It will show the path of chrome.exe

E.g: c:\users\.....\chrome.exe

3. Now just add /incognito after chrome.exe in the link

i.e.: d:\users\.....\chrome.exe / incognito

Now whenever you click the Chrome link, Chrome will start directly in incognito mode.

[Freeware] SMPlayer 0.6.5.1

SMPlayer

SMPlayer intends to be a complete front-end for MPlayer, from basic features like playing videos, DVDs, and VCDs to more advanced features like support for MPlayer filters and more.

One of the most interesting features of SMPlayer: it remembers the settings of all files you play. So you start to watch a movie but you have to leave... don´t worry, when you open that movie again it will resume at the same point you left it, and with the same settings: audio track, subtitles, volume...<

Other additional interesting features:

* Configurable subtitles. You can choose font and size, and even colors for the subtitles.
* Audio track switching. You can choose the audio track you want to listen. Works with avi and mkv. And of course with DVDs.
* Seeking by mouse wheel. You can use your mouse wheel to go forward or backward in the video.
* Video equalizer, allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and gamma of the video image.
* Multiple speed playback. You can play at 2X, 4X... and even in slow motion.
* Filters. Several filters are available: deinterlace, postprocessing, denoise... and even a karaoke filter (voice removal).
* Audio and subtitles delay adjustment. Allows you to sync audio and subtitles.
* Advanced options, such as selecting a demuxer or video & audio codecs.
* Playlist. Allows you to enqueue several files to be played one after each other. Autorepeat and shuffle supported too.
* Preferences dialog. You can easily configure every option of SMPlayer by using a nice preferences dialog.
* Translations: currently SMPlayer is translated into more than 20 languages, including Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese....
* It´s multiplatform. Binaries available for Windows and Linux.
* SMPlayer is under the GPL license.

What's New in version 0.6.5.1:

* Fix: The portable version didn't compile.
* Fix: Mplayer could fail in the first run, complaining about an unknown -no-correct-pts option. This only happens if using a recent version of mplayer (r26842 or above).

[Freeware] Auslogics Disk Defrag 1.5.19.330

Auslogics Disk Defrag 1.5.19.330

Disk fragmentation leads to system slowdowns, PC crashes, slow startup and shutdown and sometimes to system failures. Auslogics Disk Defrag is designed for fast optimization of today´s modern hard disks. Get the maximum performance out of your expensive hardware investments, improve your computer´s performance and stability.

Hard disks are by far the slowest component in your computer. CPU and memory work much faster than hard disks because they do not have moving parts. Therefore fragmented disks often become a bottleneck of the system performance. Besides causing slowdowns, fragmentation makes the hard drive disk heads move frequently when reading files which leads to freeze-ups and system crashes. It is important to keep your disks defragmented and optimized as much as possible.

Features:

* Increase your productivity - no more waiting for files to open
* Defragment disks in only a few minutes
* Useful disk fragmentation map and detailed fragmentation report

What's New in version 1.5.19.330:

* added a console utility that lets schedule disk defragmentation
* added single folder or file defragmentation
* improved program interface, as well as the chart and disk data display on first page
* improved defragmentation algorithm; now the program speed has increased by approximately 5%
* eliminated program freezes occurring after pausing the program
* added SafeBoot program support
* fixed bugs leading to program freezes
* fixed BSOD for computers that have Kaspersky Internet Security installed
* improved report appearance
* various minor improvements

The new Nokia N82 Firmware - v30.0.019

The new Nokia N82 Firmware - v30.0.019
23-07-08; RM-313
Nokia N82 (25.01)

You can check the change log here.

So should you go ahead and update to the latest firmware -

Well based on my experience, I would not recommend anyone to update immediately for following reasons -

1. You main screen is now even more cramped with the "Search: Internet and my content" taking 2 lines. (Though "google" has been added to the list of search services)

2. The m-blog / VOX / Share online takes up another line. So your main screen is now a mess...

3. I don't see any improvement in the sound quality of my phone

4. I don't see any difference in the way the videos play

5. My phone hangs more than before..

So instead of wasting your bandwidth and time downloading around 140 MB, just wait for a few more days to get a better picture and then go ahead with your update.

NOTE: This review is based on the preliminary use of my phone. I may have missed out on some significant improvements. Will update this page as and when I come across the improvements / glitches, if any. Comments will be appreciated.

Password protection sharing OFF

other options are optional (doesnt req)

Click Set up a Connection or Network ( From the left panel tasks)

Double click Set Up a wireless ad hoc (comp to comp) network

Click Next

Give A Network name (for your WLAN) For Eg… WLAN1

Select Security Type from the drop down menu as either WEP or No authentication(Open)

Cannot play video files in Vista - Solution

If you have the codecs installed and are still not to play videos in Vista or get errors like -

Media Player encountered a problem
or VLC plays only audio and not video, here is a solution for your problem (assuming you have VLC installed)-

1) Open VLC player
2) Click Settings > Preferences

3) Expand the “Video menu”
4) Highlight “Output Modules” ( by Clicking on it )
5) Located bottom right of the window, click “Advanced Options”

6) Under “Video OutPut Module” Select either one of the following options ( If one fails, try the other )
DirectX Video OutPut
Windows GDI Video OutPut (I had best luck with this)

Note that Default is usually the best option, so this is only to be changed if you have problems.

7) If these fail, you can try Dummy Video OutPut Function, or even one of the others.

So go ahead and try it out.

Info about Google Calendar Sync -

Google Calendar Sync allows you to sync events between Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook Calendar. You'll be able to determine the direction of information flow, as well as the sync frequency. Staying on top of your Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook Calendar events has never been easier!

Keep in mind that it's not possible to sync events on secondary calendars at this time. Google Calendar Sync will only sync events from your primary Google Calendar and your default Microsoft Outlook calendar.

Synchronize HTC in Vista

If you are having problems synchronizing your HTC (WM6) phone with Vista using Activesync, here is a simple solution for you.

Activesync does not work with Vista and WMDC does not seem to help you. Well you can check the CD that came with your HTC phone (my reference cell is HTC Touch GSM). Install the WMDC drivers from the WMDC folder on the CD. After that restart your system.

Now plugin your HTC and follow the on screen instructions. It is very easy to setup synchronization this day rather than using 3rd party softwares.

====================================

FEATURES
The notebook has a unique feature - ‘capacitive’ touch technology for accessing the audio, launch buttons, and volume controls. By just touching, tapping or swiping these backlit media launch buttons in a very similar manner as on a touch pad, user can have direct access to entertainment objects.

It also comes with HP QuickPlay 2.1 application which allows users to watch DVD movies, listen to music and browse pictures without booting up and users can easily switch between movies, music and pictures with a slick, widescreen interface in the HP QuickPlay 2.1 application or with the dedicated media buttons.

I have somehow not been able to play the DVD's without turning on the OS. Will have to give it more try to know how exactly to do that. Touching the DVD button launches Vista and then the Quickplay starts.

The built in webcam delivers great pictures. The quality is good enough for you to not buy another webcam.

SOFTWARES

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Edition preinstalled HP Pavilion dv6703TX notebook PC comes with various software including MS Works 8.0, Acrobat Reader , Microsoft Money, HP QuickPlay Direct 2.3 , Quickplay for Windows Version 2.3, Muvee Autoproducer, Sonic Digital Media Plus 7.0, HP Games by Oberon Media, HP Photosmart Premier, Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security software.

First of all I uninstalled Symantec Norton Internet Security, Trial ver of Office 2007 and installed Quickheal Internet security 2008, Office 2007.

DRIVERS

All the drivers and installation files are located in c:\swsetup. I created a copy of all the drivers/softwares there on a DVD n deleted the folder (it occupies around 3 GB space)

DISPLAY & SOUND

The display is awesome and you can really look forward to watching HD movies on this laptop. The sound quality is also quite good.

BATTERY LIFE

Battery life isnt much to talk about. A normal 2-3 hours battery life... With gaming, it will further come down. So if you are always on the move, go 4 a 9 cell battery.

KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD

The Pavilion's keyboard is ample and comfortable to type on for long periods, and both touchpad and mouse buttons are entirely usable. However, I seem to be still hung on my old compaq laptop and sometimes the scroll on the touchpad causes me to accidentally misplace.

PARTITIONS

I had to shrink C:\ to create new partitions. I shrunk it to 70GB. Inspite of no new installations, I only had 40GB free space left!!! So after tweaking pagefile.sys n hiber*.sys, I freed some space. Uninstalling trial ver. of Office 2007, Norton, HP Games helped freeing more space.

So now I have
C:\- 70GB; D:\ -19.5GB ; E:\ - 25.3GB; F:\ - 23.4; G:\ - 10.5GB(HP RECOVERY PARTITION); H:\ - Lightscribe DVD Writer

Printer spool error in Vista with HP Laserjet Printers

Are you facing errors like Windows cannot open printer spool or restart spool or similar errors in your Vista and HP Laserjet printers?

Here are a few tricks which may help you solve your problem.

CAUTION - Following steps involve editing of registry and changing of system settings. It is advised you take a backup of all your data to be on safer side

1. Go to Run - Regedit - Computer - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-3. Delete the HP laserjet entry there.

Now try adding HP Laserjet printer through control panel. It should work now.

If it still does not work, try the following steps -

2. Go to Control Panel - Uninstall a program - Turn Windows features on or off - print services - deselect Internet Printing Client and select LPD and LPR option. Click OK and restart your computer

3. Still if the problem persists, repeat step 2. Use your HP Laserjet 1010 driver cd to install drivers on your computer instead of letting Vista install the drivers.

Another method -

4. SOURCE

1) Open My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, View and click on the option for

Show hidden files and folders

2) Now, uncheck the option for "hide extensions for known file types" and click OK

3) Click on Start, Search and in the left column choose All Files and Folders

4) In the "all or part of the filename" box type the following

hpzimn12.dll

5) Make sure the "look in" box has Drive C selected (or whichever drive windows is installed on)

6) Click on Search

7) If the "hpzimn12.dll" file is found, right-click on it and Delete it.

8) Reboot your computer and run the installation CD that came with your printer.

Hopefully this will solve your problem, if it doesnt proceed with the following instructions from Microsoft's Knowledge Base about resolving this issue.

Whenever a computer system is upgraded from one OS to another, older driver files for devices may still be active in the system and cause problems. This was the case in this instance.

Resize a partition in Vista

IMP NOTE: The following procedure involves formating, partitioning your Harddisk. Do not forget to take a backup of your data before proceeding.

SOURCE & CREDIT - WinVista Club

You may not need to have 3rd Party Softwares to achieve resize partitions in Windows Vista.

Try the following steps -

Right Click on Computer - Manage

In the left pane, under Storage category, click on Disk Management

Now select and right click on the partition you wish to modify.

In the context menu, you will see options to Extend, Shrink or Delete the partition. Select the option you want.

You can not merge partitions in Vista with its Utility. If your 2nd partition is empty, you can delete the 2nd partition and then extend the 1st partition, to use the freed up space.

Also note that you can extend only to the right; if you are desirous of extending the partition to the left, you may have to use a 3rd party utility, like Acronis.

Sometimes one or more options may be grayed out and thus unavailable. It could be that such a step may be physically not possible.

How To Resize A Partition In Vista, if Disk Management fails.

Should you wish to continue, nevertheless, please first backup your important data should anything go wrong. You may have to use diskpart.exe ! Diskpart utility can do everything that the Disk Management console can do, and more! It’s invaluable for script writers or anyone who simply prefers working at a command prompt. For more information on it click

Enter diskpart in start menu's search bar and hit enter. A 'command prompt' like window will open. Type list disk and hit enter. This will show you a list of all your hard disks. Now type: select disk to select the disk you want to work with.

If you want to create a partition. Type 'create' and a set of options will appear. Choose one, and type create

There are 2 types of partitions you can create : Primary and Extended. Only a Primary partition can be made bootable, so if you are planning to install an OS, you will have to select this option. For backup purposes you may opt for Extended partitions.

Next, to see which number is associated with the volume you are planning to work with, type: list volume

Example :
To extend size by 5GB : Type - Extend size=5000
To shrink the volume by minimum 1GB, upto a maximum of 5 GB : Type - Shrink desired=5000 minimum=1000
You can even delete a partition by typing - Delete Partition and hitting enter.

Windows also includes a additional command-line tool for file, system and disk management, called Fsutil. This utility helps you to change the short name of a file, find files by SID's (Security Identifier) and perform other complex tasks.

FSUtil and Diskpart are powerful, but not for the inexperienced Windows user. So do be careful, please.

If you get the message : There is not enough space available on the disk(s) to complete this operation.

Most new computers with OEM Vista pre-installs come with 4 partitions. Hard disks configured as basic disks are limited to 4 primary partitions or 3 primary partitions and 1 extended partition and multiple logical drives. And as such, if you try to shrink the OS partition, you may find that you cannot create a 5th partition due to this limit.

There could be two possible solutions for this issue:

1) As the disk pre-configured by OEM may have conflicts with disk management tool in Windows Vista, you should try some 3rd party tools like Auslogics Freeware Defrag, to repartition the disk.
2) You may try to delete a less important partition created already and merge the space together to create a new partition with proper drive letter.
Deleting the partitions created by the OEM is often not possible due to the way the OEMs configure the partitions. Therefore the option then is to extend the operating system partition back to the original size to regain use of the unallocated space. If additional storage is needed, consider adding an external USB hard disk.

Vista SP1 is expected to address this issue !
